A PACIFIC RIM EVENT (suggestion)

WHAT
An event based on the world of Pacific Rim, a movie about giant robots fighting giant alien dinosaurs for the survival of mankind. The world of Pacific Rim has a cross-dimensional bridge called the Breach — a throat-like connection that creates a rift between two universes, and allows the world to be easily integrated into Zelien's rift events. As the PacRim universe is already familiar with cross-dimensional shenanigans, it should be fairly simple to do a hit-and-run kind of event set in a canon that's already aware and familiar with universe-traveling craziness.

WHERE (OPTION A)
Proposed setting A would be a slightly AU'd version of movie canon, where Operation Pitfall didn't succeed, effectively killing the entire main cast in the process. This is important to the setting and for game mechanics as EV already has a PacRim cast present; having them all dead in setting A would allow the cast freedom to move organically during the event, and doubles as a buffer for characters who aren't familiar with the canon and would prefer not to be inundated by information about the PacRim cast's canon histories.

WHERE (OPTION B)
Setting B follows all the events of PacRim canon to its conclusion — way into its conclusion, as this version of the world is currently in the process of rebuilding. Again, to avoid cast-hogging, PacRim cast members in-game who are still alive after the movie will find their "native" selves suspiciously missing from their home world.

HOW
Going from Zelien to Earth, 2025, is explained easily - a rift has been opened again. Whether it's COMPASS's doing or the Precursors' doesn't matter; a new Breach is active, and along with dumping Zelien's population into the PacRim world, it's allowed for the kaiju to attack again. And attack they do.

WORLD MECHANICS
For simplicity's sake: an IC week-long event gets at least one kaiju from each category. The Breach is stable enough for kaiju to pass through at least once a day, and at any size (except let's not because that would be terrible); here's a sample breakdown:

- day 1: no kaiju, yay exploring
- day 2: no kaiju, yay simulators?
- day 3: category 1 & 2 kaiju, easy to moderate
- day 4: no kaiju, yay kaiju cultists.....
- day 5: no kaiju, yay operation pitfall pt 2
- day 6: category 3 & 4 kaiju, moderate to hard
- day 7: category 5 kaiju (double event), difficult x2

But how are people going to fight these things, you ask? In both options, COMPASS has kindly, with their generosity, provided one full Shatterdome of working Jaegers. It's part of their experiment. Or this particular version of the world is more fortunate with resources on the Jaeger-building front. Or this version of the world simply has had luck on their side and the Jaegers - including all 23 established ones - are still intact, in varying stages of serviceability.

Whatever and however it came to happen, there are Jaegers to fight the monsters with.

FUN ME
What's there to do in the PacRim world when you're not actively battling giant monsters?

Explore The Boneslums
The boneslums are cramped mini-cities that are built on, under, and around the bones of a dead kaiju. These places are typically found in coastal areas, often within traveling distance from a Shatterdome, and are thriving black markets for anything and everything you could reasonably think of. Need kaiju bone powder for extra oomph in the bedroom? What about some kaiju shit for fertilizing your plants? How about an old-school cassette tape player, there's one of those lying around too!

Of course, the boneslums are also hotbeds for criminal activity, and are self-policing; gangsters and smugglers run these places, so don't travel alone! And don't get caught by the Sisters of the Kaiju either; they'll likely drown you as human sacrifice.

Explore the Shatterdome
So you don't want to leave the safety of the Shatterdome; that's alright. Any place that can house thirty Jaegers at any given time is bound to be one hell of a large compound - it's practically its own city. Visit the Jaeger hangars, where these behemoth machines are parked with plenty of overhead space. Get up on the catwalks, where you'll have a great view of the whole hangar (and maybe help the Jaeger crews fix things). Or try any of the training rooms at the Kwoon, and get some needed fighting training done.

There's also the LOCCENT, where you can monitor training and drift progress of the Conn-Pods, either the training simulator version or the live in-a-Jaeger version. Careful with the Conn-Pods, though; if you chase the RABIT, you'll likely end up reliving your worst experiences in full color, surround sound, 100% interactive. (Please do not chase the RABIT.)

DRIFT, DRIFT, DRIFT
Alternately, TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN or BUILD BUILD BUILD. Or just mock everything else; this stupid useless wall certainly needs all the mocking it can get. Want some bonding time with a good friend? Try drifting with them in a simulator, and watch your friendship either go up spectacularly in flames, or end up bonding (maybe boning) together. Help the J-techs and the K-science crews to fix the Jaegers, or update the OS; you could also pig out at the mess hall because to hell with rationing when the end of the world is so near. There are residence halls with many rooms to sleep in, and there are even labs and classrooms to peruse if you wanted to do things on your own. The Shatterdome is 100% in support of all kinds of bonding activities.

All kinds of bonding activities.

WHAT'S THE CATCH?
Nuclear explosion, among other things.

Whether it's because the rift is closing - rendering Zelien's transplants stranded again on another different world - or this version of Earth can't sustain life for much longer, the Breach must be closed the way it was closed in the movie: by exploding a nuclear bomb in the Breach, or at least exploding something shut so that everyone passes COMPASS's new "test". But that's the endgame for the event.

What else is there? There's the Sisters of the Kaiju, who worship the kaiju as angels sent from heaven, here to punish us; there's the very hostile natives who won't like to share resources with a new set of aliens; there's general poverty everywhere, because everything outside the Shatterdome (and sometimes within it) is rationed out and tightly controlled. A lot of major cities are unlivable, either because of the kaiju or because of radiation exposure during the early days of the kaiju war. The locals want you gone just as much as they want the kaiju gone; you won't be very welcome.

And there's also kaiju blue. You can't swim in the ocean, that'd be suicide; the water's been contaminated and re-contaminated by kaiju fluids that the water would poison your body and kill you in minutes. You're piloting a Jaeger? Better make sure it's a Mark 4 and up, or you run the risk of the bad kind of radiation exposure. If you've fought in one, let's hope you like the neural and nerve damage that comes with it, because getting your Jaeger's arm ripped off means your circuit suit burns itself into your skin by overloading, and the neural relay clamp will try to fry your brain for the same reason.

Also: drowning is the number one cause of death among Jaeger pilots. And 9 times out of 10, you're fighting the kaiju in the water.

Comforting thoughts for you.

FREEBIES?
Tech in general could be taken, like a portable Pons system or just mp3 players; 21st century-style clothes would be generally available as well. Medicines would be common but the selection could be limited to generic brands, and most food available are meant to last for a while.

WHAT ABOUT CR?
Jaegers are a two-pilot system; non-PR characters can be assigned a drift partner or choose their own, or opt not to pilot and stick to the other divisions or crews. Each Jaeger needs its own Strike team as well; from command control to drivesuit techs to conn-pod engineers, there's always a role needing to be filled.

IN SUMMARY...
Pacific Rim is a canon that emphasizes on the power of relationships and the good that comes from them; their world is literally saved by the power of love. With ample game-wide planning, this could be a very fun event that'll provide a push for many game relationships to develop further, and even help establish new ones that only the threat of an apocalypse could facilitate.

Please consider this suggestion for a rift event, and thank you for your time.
